Packing for Umrah is different from packing for any other trip, mostly because of the Ihram restrictions and the sheer amount of walking and standing involved. We've packed and shipped enough Umrah orders to know exactly what people forget — and it's usually the small stuff, not the obvious things like a passport.
Ihram Essentials
You'll need at least two sets of Ihram cloth (one to wear, one as backup in case the first gets dirty or torn). Go for a slightly thicker, good-quality unstitched cloth — thin or cheap material tends to slip and need constant readjusting, which gets exhausting after hours of Tawaf and Sa'i.
An Ihram belt or pouch is worth packing too. It keeps your phone, some cash, and your hotel key secure without needing pockets, which Ihram cloth obviously doesn't have.
Daily Wear Thobes
Outside of Ihram periods, you'll want comfortable, breathable thobes for daily wear around the hotel, for meals, and for general movement between Makkah and Madinah. Lightweight cotton or cotton-blend plain thobes work best here — this isn't the trip for heavy embroidered designer pieces. Pack at least three to four, since laundry access varies depending on where you're staying.
Footwear
Simple rubber or foam sandals that slip on and off easily — you'll be removing and rewearing shoes constantly for prayers. Avoid anything with leather or fur for the Ihram period specifically, as it's not permitted, but for daily wear outside Ihram, comfort matters more than style here. Your feet will thank you by day three.
Prayer and Worship Items
A small Quran (with translation if you'll want to read along), a tasbeeh, and a lightweight prayer mat if your hotel doesn't provide one in-room. A small notebook for a dua list is something a lot of people forget and then wish they'd brought.
Toiletries — Read the Fine Print
During Ihram, scented products are restricted, so pack unscented soap, unscented sunscreen if you can find it, and skip cologne entirely for that period. Bring a small first-aid kit too — blister plasters specifically, since the walking adds up fast and most people aren't used to that volume on their feet.
Documents and Money
Passport, visa printout, Umrah permit if required, and a money belt or pouch you can wear under your daily thobe. Keep photocopies of your documents separately from the originals, just in case.
Comfort Extras That Actually Matter
A reusable water bottle (you'll drink far more Zamzam and regular water than you expect), a small hand fan or portable cooling towel for the heat, and a power bank — charging points get crowded fast in busy areas near the Haram.
Our Umrah Pack, If You'd Rather Not Piece It Together Yourself
We put together a Complete Umrah Pack that bundles the Ihram, a guide book, and a digital tasbeeh counter in one go, specifically because we kept seeing customers buy these items separately and still forget one or two pieces. It's worth checking out if you'd rather sort this in one order instead of five.
Safe travels, and may your Umrah be accepted.
